Schools Get Involved With Elections Office

High School Elections across the county again embody the true spirit of the election process. Cherokee County is proud to provide the Direct Record Electronic (DRE) voting machines as a tool for learning.

Woodstock High School ignited the spark with a rousing Spirit Day Election. The process was so successful, they began plans for their Homecoming elections.

Cherokee High added a Voter Registration drive to their Student Government Election in August. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and school spirit from the very booming voter turnout at their August election and the addition of 10 new registered voters.

Student Senate elections for Reinhardt College spanned three days. The use of the DRE equipment “made our job easier and flawless” said, Andi Demcellari of the Student Government Association.

The First Vote program ideal is to have each graduating student leave high school with a diploma and as a registered voter. Cherokee County High Schools have fostered this ideal. Crossroads High School added 13 new registered voters to the voter list on 10/26/05.

Most of the schools have Voter Registration drives planned for the Spring semester. Students may register at 17 ½ but must be 18 by an election date to vote in that election.

Etowah High School employed the DRE voting machines for an enthusiastic Civic Day Election. They elected a Mayor, District Attorney, Magistrate Judge, Chief Probation Officer, Chief of Police, and Fire Chief. Civic Day activities, such as this election, permit students to understand a more personal perspective on elections, paths of governing, and see their vote count.

Cherokee County Board of Elections is excited to continue our commitment to youth voter registration and be a contributor to the school election process.
